A Southern California Start
Actor and producer LeJon Stewart has had an extraordinary career spanning theater, television, film, commercials, education and international entertainment. LeJon grew up in Southern California, born in Inglewood and raised in Compton and Carson, two communities that had a major impact on his outlook, drive and creative aspirations.
His journey into performing was remarkably early. LeJon’s first theater production was in A Raisin in the Sun where he played Travis with The All Peoples Community Theater group when he was just 11 years old. That early experience showed him the power of storytelling and planted the seeds for what would become a multifaceted entertainment career.
The Passion for Learning and Performance
LeJon also had an artistic side, and continued to pursue it in high school doing dance, and appeared on Soul Train. He took his love of performing to college, where he also appeared on American Bandstand.LeJon earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in just three years, instead of the usual four. He combined his academic interests with his longtime love of performance, majoring in English and minoring in Theater Arts.
His leadership potential was evident in his college years as well. In his third and final year he was elected ASB Comptroller, acting as Treasurer. At the same time, he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and was the first Kappa to pledge through Dominguez Hills.The next year, LeJon was elected Polemarch, or President, of the Upsilon Chapter, representing UCLA, California State University, Los Angeles, California State University, Northridge and California State University, Dominguez Hills.
From Law & Entertainment Management to Hollywood
After college, LeJon went to Loyola Law School for one year. That summer he got a job at a private-practice law firm in Century City. So his trajectory quickly changed again when an entertainment business management firm hired him.This brought him into direct contact with some of the entertainment industry’s established names. Among the firm’s clients were Gene Hackman, Apollonia, Kelly LeBrock and Boz Scaggs.
While his professional path first took him through the legal and entertainment business management worlds, the urge to perform stayed a strong influence in LeJon’s life.
Family, Education & Community Impact
LeJon married his college sweetheart Tandalaya Nelson. Together they bought a house in the Inland Empire and raised three boys and one girl.Another important chapter in his life was his commitment to education. LeJon became a certified teacher earning a Single Subject Credential in English and a Multiple Subject Credential for grades K-6 for the Colton School District.He designed and taught an At Risk Program for middle schools and later taught at Colton High School where his responsibilities included Special Education, English and Drama.
In his teaching, he brought the same spirit of mentoring and community that had marked his earlier leadership roles. Family has been part of his identity, and also his professional achievements. LeJon has celebrated his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments, while experiencing the profound loss of his son Adonis. He is the proud grandfather of son Lejon Nelson and daughter Parisse who graduated from Berkeley in 2020 and son Avery graduated from UCLA the same year.
The Boogie Nites Scene That Changed Everything
LeJon’s move to professional acting came during a summer off from teaching. He scored a part as a background actor in the movie Boogie Nights.His role was small, but to be on the set was life-changing. That night, LeJon had an epiphany. It was time to pursue acting as a career for real.He later joined the SAG in 1998 and AFTRA in 2000. He also got a job working for an extras casting company, while utilizing background work as a way to gain experience, make connections, and get closer to his goal of becoming a working actor.
Become a Disney Character in Pirates of the Caribbean
One of the highlights of LeJon Stewart’s career came in 2005 when Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Films held auditions that attracted around 800 actors auditioning for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
Eventually he was cast as a Black Pearl pirate and Captain Jack Sparrow’s rifleman.
Director Gore Verbinski named his character “Lejon” in an odd link between the actor and the fictional world of the movie. The character was a pirate of the Black Pearl named Lejon, connected to Captain Sparrow and the island of Tortuga.This part got yet another dimension when Disney and LEGO made a LEGO toy of the Lejon character, securing the actor a place in the merchandising legacy of the film forever.
AFI: Expanding His Acting Education
LeJon’s professional development included the SAG Conservatory, a program that links SAG actors with the American Film Institute (AFI) and gives performers a chance to explore different facets of acting.
He studied a wide range of acting classes, from comedy to drama and from improvisation to other performance disciplines. His training also gave him opportunities to work on several student films, honing his craft while working with up-and-coming filmmakers.
Film and Television Work
LeJon has an impressive screen résumé to show for his years. He can be seen in Thomas Haden Church’s Cardboard Boxer and TV productions such as Dan Harmon’s Community in which he played the alter ego of Donald Glover’s Troy, Parenthood and FX’s Legit.Among other productions, he has appeared in the television movie Art Prison, alongside Randall Park.
He can go between comedy and drama, television, independent film and commercial work and that’s become one of the hallmarks of his career.
A familiar face in national and international advertising.
LeJon’s versatility has also made him a much sought-after commercial performer. His advertising credits include a national spot for Mercedes-Benz directed by Michael Bay and campaigns for Reebok and McDonald’s.He also starred in a regional Mountain Dew commercial directed by Hype Williams with Busta Rhymes. He also appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for The Voice.
Korean Airlines chose LeJon to appear in an international print advertisement and commercial campaign which further increased his visibility outside of the United States and added to LeJon’s international appeal.
Theater, Streaming Productions & Podcasts
LeJon has stayed connected to live performance and independent theater. He has been with The Sky Pilot Theater Company for about nine years and is a star of the scripted podcast NPRmageddon.He has also kept adding to his screen presence through streaming. He currently has around 10 feature projects out there on sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Tubi.
His achievements are the result of an actor who has consistently grabbed opportunities in mainstream Hollywood movies, independent films, theater, podcasts, commercials and digital streaming.
Award-Winning Performances
LeJon’s work has been recognized by various entertainment organizations. He was presented with a Channy Award for Best Supporting Actor from Channel 101, the entertainment platform started by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab, in December 2023.He also took home Best Supporting Actor and Best Villain for his role as the Leprechaun of Cream in the next year.
LeJon received the Dick Gregory Award in August 2024, in honor of the activist and comedian’s legacy. The National Congress of Black Women presented the award.His recent achievements have only further burnished his reputation on the international film festival circuit.
The Job and His Recognition in 2025-2026
LeJon’s recent credits include highly-praised work on the short film The Job, directed by Craig Railsback. LeJon plays Todd, a leading man who earned him rave reviews in the movie.LeJon received the Best Actor in a Short Film award at the Culver City Film Festival in 2025 for his role in The Job.
He kept that momentum through 2026. He won the Best Improv Actor at the Golden State Film Festival as well as the NIFF Golden Actor Award at the 11th edition of the Nez International Film Festival in India. The latter was to mark his career and cinematic excellence.These honors mark another significant milestone in a career that has continued to evolve across decades.
Independent Cinema & Award Winning Shorts
LeJon has also been a strong presence in independent film. He worked on the independent films Loose Ends and Water, under directors J. Luksetich and Randy Kent, respectively.
His film festival resume includes three award-winning short films: Lucy the Lion, directed by Academy Award-nominated director Kalman Apple; Echoes of the Forest, directed by Nestor Vinelli; and Down & Out in Vampire Hills, directed by Craig Railsback.
LeJon starred as Soothsayer DeJa in the feature film Down for the Count. The film is produced by Tyler Turner and is set for streaming in October 2024.He also collaborated with Elijah Perry on Echoes of the Forest and with Craig Railsback on Lucy the Lion and The Job. He has also been involved with Skeleton Crew, which is part of the larger Star Wars production world.
International Media Acclaim
LeJon also hired internationally known publicist Micky Soler in the spring of 2024 which helped broaden his media exposure outside of the United States.His international profile ballooned fast. He was interviewed live on Chile’s Arica TV and featured on the cover of UK-based Original Magazine in its July 2024 issue. He also featured in the August and September 2024 editions of the magazine.
During the same time, LeJon was featured in publications in the UK, Italy, Greece, Spain and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He was also featured in Hollywood Entertainment News magazine’s Summer 2024 issue.
He appeared on the UK podcast Directed By Dean in November 2024.
